IATF 16949 certification readiness

Prepare the manufacturing site, supporting functions and customer evidence for the automotive certification route.

Standards and scheme rules

Use the current published baseline.

IATF 16949:2016 remains the implementation baseline in the reviewed guidance. Rules 6th Edition has applied since 1 January 2025. Include current sanctioned interpretations, FAQs and customer-specific requirements; the Rules SI register includes SI22–SI27 effective July 2026. The July 2026 second-edition communiqué describes a revision in development, with publication planned for mid-2027; this is not a new certifiable edition or a fixed transition deadline.

Public-source review: 2 November 2026. Check the official references below for subsequent changes before contracting an audit.

Scope before schedule

Confirm what the certificate must cover.

Confirm manufacturing-site eligibility, automotive products, customer relationships and remote supporting functions with an IATF-recognised certification body. Do not assume a standalone design office or distributor is eligible for its own manufacturing-site certificate.

Practical preparation

Prepare evidence from real work.

  1. Customer requirements

Maintain the applicable customer-specific requirements and evidence of review. Link supplier obligations and customer scorecards to accountable process owners.

  2. Product and process planning

Connect APQP, FMEA, control plans, measurement-system analysis, statistical controls and production-part approval to customer requirements and applicable editions.

  3. Shop-floor execution

Sample special characteristics, setup verification, inspection, traceability, maintenance and contingency arrangements. Check that approved changes reach the actual process.

  4. Audit preparation

Prepare quality-system, manufacturing-process and product audits, management review and effective corrective actions. Agree audit planning, data and nonconformity deadlines under current Rules 6 requirements.

These are preparation topics, not a complete clause checklist. Use licensed standards and the applicable scheme documents to define the full requirements.

Decision boundaries

Keep certification and approval separate.

IATF certification is a QMS decision. It does not replace customer nomination, PPAP acceptance or product homologation. Suriyavaan does not issue IATF certificates.

Suriyavaan provides scoped advisory preparation. Independent certification bodies and responsible authorities make certification and approval decisions; no outcome is guaranteed.
